  • Getting ready for Reception

  • What time does school start and finish?


    The school day starts at 8.45am and finishes at 3.15pm. Please ensure you are prompt to collect your child. 

  • How do I get a tea time/breakfast club space?

Please be aware these provisions are highly oversubscribed and we suggest that in addition to putting your child on our waiting list, you also explore the other options in the area.

  • What do I do if my child will be picked up or dropped off by someone else?


    If your child is going to be picked up by a friend or different family member you must inform the class teacher when you drop off or contact the office.Where possible please add these people as an emergency contact. Please do this well before 3.15pm so any changes can be communicated to the classroom teacher and support staff.

  • What do the children have for school lunch?

  • Do I have to pay for school lunches?


    We are a cash free school, all payments will be via Parentpay. Your log in details will be provided to you soon after your child starts school. Lunches for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are covered by the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme. Please follow the link below to check if your child may be eligible for free school meals ( Nursery - Year 6).


    We ask all parents and carers of children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 whose children attend school in Waltham Forest to complete an online universal infant free school meals form .

  • What can I put in my child's lunchbox?


    If your child will be having a packed lunch please ensure you provide a healthy meal. Their lunch should not contain nuts, glass bottles or fizzy drinks.

  • Can I send in sweets on their birthday?

    We ask that you do not send cake or sweets to school to celebrate your child’s birthday but they may bring in fruit to share with their friends.


  • What does my child need to wear for school?


    You will need to buy a school uniform and P.E kit for your child. The link below will provide further information.   • Do I need to buy a book bag? What do I put inside it?


    Yes, It is important that your child has a bag to take home any work, home learning or reading books. You can purchase Hillyfield ones from SpeedStitch or our school office.

  • What happens if my child has an accident at school?


    If your child has a head bump you may receive a phone call to notify you of the incident. If first aid has been administered you will receive a medical note. It is common for young children to have small first aid incidents whilst they explore a new environment. Please do not worry if you receive a phone call. If you have any concerns please discuss them with a member of staff

  • Can I drive to school to drop off or pick up?


    We recommend that you walk or cycle to school. Most roads surrounding our school are permit parking only. Our school is also in a School Streets zone which restricts access.

  • How do I speak to the teacher?


    You will be able to see the class teacher on a daily basis. For small matters or concerns speak to the class teacher or EYP at the door before or after school. If you do not drop your child to school you can ring the office and ask for the teacher to call you or email your query to the office for them to pass on. 

  • What if my child is unwell?


    If your child has a temperature, vomits or is generally unwell, the school will call you to  collect them. Make sure you have a contact listed who will be able to collect them. Please note that your child should remain off school for 48 hours from their last incident of vomiting or diarrhoea. If there is an instance of headlice, you will be called to collect your child and the child can return to school once treatment has been administered.

  • How can I get involved in the school?


    We love to have parents involved in our school events. There will be stay and play events, concerts, reading cafes and trips. Look out for more information on these once transition is over and all children are settled.

  • How will the school let me know about events and information?


    We use an app called SchoolPing to communicate with Parents. All information is sent out via this app, including the weekly newsletter. You will receive a login by email and paper copy. If you have any issues, please contact the school office as soon as possible.

    The app also has a calendar which provides a quick reference to class and school  events.

  • If my child needs medicine, can they be given it in school?


    We are unable to administer medicine unless it is prescribed by a medical practitioner. If there is prescribed medicine, we can administer if a form is completed and signed by the parent/guardian at the school office.

  • If I wish for my child to have a day off school, how do I ask?


     Hillyfield Primary Academy, following the guidelines from the DfE and the local authority, does not authorise holidays during term time. Consequences for parents taking children on holiday during term time may result in a penalty notice of £60 per parent per child,  issued by the local authority. Absence requests must be submitted on a “Pupil request for leave during term time” form. Evidence to support your request must be attached to the form. This form is available from the school office. Where possible appointments must be made out of school hours. Appointments taken without evidence will not be authorised.

    In the event of emergency travel plans due to family circumstances, the school will expect detailed proof of travel plans. This will not result in the request being authorised, but travel plans must be submitted for consideration. Any request for leave which is not submitted on a “Pupil request for leave during term time” form will not be considered. The Educational Welfare Officer may contact you at any time regarding your child’s attendance.Your child will miss out on some of the social aspects of school life if they are taken on holiday during term time, particularly at the beginning and end of term. New topics are introduced at the beginning of term and celebrations and trips are often at the end of term.
